Some of the most beautiful places in the world are accessible only on foot, and a hike can be such an invigorating and replenishing experience. What’s not to like about being immersed in nature while being physically active! With so many different hiking trails out there, it can be hard to know where to start. Here is a list of just some of the best international hikes for shoulder seasons – whether you’re looking for a challenge or something a little more relaxed.
1. The Highline Trail in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA
The Highline Trail in Glacier National Park is a definite if you’re up for a challenge. With an elevation gain of 1,128 metres, this trail is not for the faint of heart. But the views are more than worth it. You’ll get to see glaciers, waterfalls, and wildflowers as you hike along the trail. Autumn is the perfect time to hike this trail, as the gorgeous deciduous trees bring out their yellow, orange and red-hued leaves to paint the surrounding mountains in a warm glow. Just be sure to start early, as the trail can get crowded later in the day.
2. Cinque Terre National Park, Italy
Cinque Terre means “five lands” in Italian, and that’s exactly what this national park is—five villages perched atop cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the province of La Spezia. The picturesque villages are connected by a network of hiking trails, making it easy to explore all five in one day. If you have the time, be sure to explore the diverse culture each of these five towns showcase, to gain a greater understanding of what life is like in these unique coastal villages. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as some of the trails can be steep and rocky.
3. Table Mountain National Park, South Africa
If you’re looking for breathtaking views, look no further than Table Mountain National Park in South Africa. This park offers more than 800 kilometres of hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging multi-day treks. Whether you want to hike along the coast or inland among the mountains, there’s a trail here for you. Spring is an ideal time to hike Table Mountain National Park as the weather is mild and there are fewer crowds than in summer.
4. The Tongariro Northern Circuit, New Zealand
If you’re planning a trip to New Zealand, make sure to add the Tongariro Northern Circuit to your itinerary. This nearly 45-kilometre loop is open for hikers between late October and April and takes you through volcanic landscapes, native bushland, and alpine meadows.
